Lovely review from Catanetwork! “Savor this book like an irresistible treat; THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is simply yummy!”
Eudora O’Brien is from a family of women whose answer to conflict is to avoid it by running away. Pea, short for Sweetpea her sister’s pet name for Eudora, is the last of her small family and she is on a quest to find her sister’s reincarnated spirit and make amends, somewhere among the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. Gathering all her worldly possessions, including a snapshot of her sister and her mother’s tarnished bracelet, she stuffs them in her car and strikes out across Texas. It just so happens that Pea’s heart is as big as Texas and she collects a few strays along the way, including a kitten she names Isis after the Egyptian goddess of rebirth, a pregnant teenager she saved from an abusive boyfriend and a dangerously handsome con man that just may have her breaking her “Through With Men” rule.
Not far into her journey, Pea’s car breaks down outside Jewel, Texas. While waiting for repairs and working to pay for them; Eudora, who by now decides she needs a stronger name, meets two stalwart but very different women that have a powerful influence on her. Gloria teaches Eudora how to weld a sword like Dark Agnes, a fictional character of Conan the Barbarian fame, and Lorena teaches her how to cook, thus becoming the Goddess of Fried Okra. But as much as they teach her about herself and her inner strength, they also learn about compassion from Eudora .
